Meaningful Gifts: First Birthday

My own son's first birthday is fast approaching, and I've been asked by my parents and in-laws what he would like for a gift. What would he like? What would meet him just where he's at as he turns one year old? Here are some ideas...

A walking toy is such a wonderful way to encourage the new skill of taking steps. I love this one because the child can load up the wagon with treasures and push them from one place to another. It also has a tight suspension in the wheels, making wipeouts less likely to happen. Keep in mind that this kind of toy won't make a child learn to walk faster or better; instead, it offers a new and exciting way to use the skill.

Dishware is a big step in self-feeding and requires time and practice for children to learn how to use it appropriately. This set is child-sized and similar in weight to ceramic or glass, but it's not breakable. I'd start with just one piece (maybe the plate) and go from there.

Rody is so much fun to bounce on, pretend play with, nuzzle, and wrestle. My son has had one for a few months now, and while he's not quite tall or steady enough to bounce independently, he still loves this toy and uses it often. There are lots of colors available, and it inflates easily with a bike pump.

At around the age of one, a book starts to become something to look at and listen to rather than something to chew on. Your baby also begins to remember and recognize friends and family members. This company creates a sturdy, well-designed board book of all the important people in your child's life. There are other options as well - all you do is upload your photos.
